A 7-star hotel in Islamabad?

This note has also appeared in ATP: All Things Pakistan

I just read this in the news. Daily Times has reported the inauguration of The Centaurus, Pakistan’s first seven-star hotel project, in Islamabad.

I am left wondering what are these people thinking? Can Pakistan afford, and sustain, a 7-star hotel? We can barely maintain a decent 2 or 3 star hotel in our major cities. Are we now competing with Dubai for architectural grandiosity? And whoever came up with the name should probably look for a job in Hollywood…

First 7-star hotel’s construction begins

September 01. 2006

ISLAMABAD: The Centaurus, Pakistan’s first seven-star hotel project, was inaugurated on Thursday. The $350 million complex is planned to have a 37-storey deluxe hotel, with two 21-storey residential towers, a 25-storey corporate office complex, and a 5-storey shopping mall. The complex will have a parking lot that would accommodate over 2,000 vehicles. The project will be completed in three years.

The Pak Gulf Construction Private Limited company (PGCL) and Messrs Atkins engineering company – the constructors of Dubai’s renowned Burj Al Arab – are executing the project. Saudi Arabian Al-Tamimi Group and the Sardar Group of Companies are making the investment.

PGCL Chief Executive Officer Sardar Tanveer Ilyas said that the structure complies with the building codes of the Capital Development Authority and can easily sustain an earthquake of 9.5 Richter scale. Ilyas appreciated Pakistan government’s policies, which he said, had encouraged him to make the investment. He said the project would provide employment to thousands.

President General Pervez Musharraf on Thursday said it was “the right time to invest in Pakistan” because of the country’s positive economic policies of de-regulation, liberalisation and privatisation coupled with a liberal foreign exchange regimen.

“We have opened all sectors of the economy for investment and the scourge of red-tapism and bureaucratic delays are being done away with,” said the president at the foundation-laying ceremony of The Centaurus.

Musharraf said that greater investment was also helping the country fight extremism and terrorism as both evils stemmed from poverty, illiteracy and the lack of economic opportunities. He said that all the government’s policies were in the best interests of the nation. “Whether it is relations with a country, diplomatic ties or our attitude towards investment, it is being done in Pakistan’s national interest.”

Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Sherpao, President AJK Sardar Zulqarnain, Population and Welfare Minister Chaudhary Shahbaz Hussain and Chairman CDA Kamran Lashari attended the ceremony. APP

It is good from the Economic point of view but there are so many other things and we have to wait for the public response.

  2. Hira says:

i have to say iv never been so excited as i am after hearing about the construction work on the centaurus, finally we too have someplace where we young people can ave some fun, seriously it couldnt be better!!!

  3. Nausherwan says:

I think its good to have such an architecture in Islamabad which will improve the beauty of Islamabad …but still i think CDA should take proper care of the construction and i think now is the time to make Islamabad a City of FLY OVERS as well because if CDA will not notice the growing traffic … i think the traffic system of Islamabad ill become like Lahore and Karachi ….so to meet such great constructions we should also look for other probs of Islamabad.

  4. Hamid says:

Its simply tremendous. I agree that yes it will create lots of small scale jops for the poor. even middle level, like sales men etc. yes Foriegn Investment is a positive sign. Many other investors would follow. Inshallah. At last, we see Pakistan heading forward. But please ask CDA to Constuct bridges, underpasses etc.Islamabad needs to remain Islamabad. once again, its great to have CENTAURUS in Pakistan.

  5. amir says:

    EEEEEWWWWWWWw….MArvelous idea…
really excited about it….and know PAKISTAN will have a name in that world..a well recognised country having a 7-star hotel…

  6. Noor says:

well this is the high time for pakistan to realize the importance of such mega projects in the country its not just the matter of affordibility, optimistically thinking how many job opportunities it will generate in coming future for the general public and also the establishmnet of such gigantic endaveors will definitly improve pakistans image in the world just take the example of malayshia how mych of foreign direct investment the country is generating via construction of mega projects . It will definitly give a rise to our economy and may be our currency will get some value in the foreign market wich is eventually going to be a very good thing specially for students like me as education in the west is damn expensive just because our currency is 60 or 113 times lesser then the western countries. So in a longer run i think establishment of such big ventures in a healthy sign just because we are a poor nation it doesnot mean that we should not strive for the best and make our selves better for the up coming cut throat competitive world. peace🙂

  7. murtaza says:

i am very plesed to listen this news.this is a good sign for our country. it shows that we are on the road to success.

  8. Ali Raza says:

I think this is going to be the start of new era of progress in pakistan. with such a massive investment, pakistan will grab the attention of the investors around the globe, and also it will help islamabad to meet the growing corporate office space demand for specially IT and Software compnaies. It’s absolutely wonderful thing going to happen to pakistan.

  9. Omar says:

It will definitely open gates for unemployed persons, other foreign investors. I am really inspired by the design of the Centaurus, it will provide beauty to Islamabad. Message for CDA: pls think about redesigning of Citibank and PIMS chowks. Also there is much parking problem in Blue Area. I would like to suggest that there is lot of space b/w plazas of Blue Area. Please use vehicles to clear them so that it could be use for parking purposes.

  10. Sardar Jawad H. Khan says:

Its a very good Project in Pakistan and its will be the symbol of Islamabad in Future.

    Well doen Sardar`s………………..

  11. NASIR ASHRAF says:

Now it s a time that pakistan also show its marvellous architection to come true the grand project of centaurus and display the glamour scope of hospitality in pakistan which we really need, and motivate to chain hotels to come in pakistan and invest more projects for the booming economy of pakistan.

My all good wishes with them..

  12. Sana'a Z says:

    Salam Bilal Bhai
I happened to come across this blog as I was surfing. Interestingly enough I know who came up with the name, and I hate it! He works with me. Our Islamabad Interflow office worked on the campaign, we pitched and won the account… sadly it’s typical desi style management, God knows how they are actually going to be able to put the bldg up, they have managed to drive us insane already! the “5 star deluxe” hotel ( 5 is the limit, sorry! :P) will be bidded for by some international chain perhaps Sheraton or Le Meridian.
personally I think it’s much more important for Pakistan to invest in more meaningful projects than always trying to focus on the whole “softer image” thing. Maybe if we increased our education rate for instance, we would naturally have a “softer image” . The apts range from 2 to 8 crore rupes for the penthouses. it’s crazy!
Anyway… let me know if u want more dirt!😉
ps shaadi mubarak ho from us.

it is a best project in Pakistan. When I visited its office a few days ago, I realy got pleasur from such a best project in Pakistan

  15. Abdul Bari says:

i want to say this is a vary good step that a 7 star hotel is bulding in our capital city islamabad.i have seen burj al arab hotel in dubai and that is soo beautful.i hope that same contraction company will build this hotel also beutiful and safe from earthquick.

  16. Abdul Bari says:

With complication of this hotel more visitor will come in Islamabad. our tourism sector has thought that Pakistan northern areas are so beautiful and we can attract tourist to build nice hotels and parks in these areas. Because in summer most of people come in these areas.

  17. Khalid says:

    Bilal,

Always an inspiration to meet young Pakistanis with a track-record. Equally, agree with you on the state of “realism” behind the Centaurus!!!!!

Look forward to hearing from you and ESPECIALLY Sana’a Z | September 22, 2006 ” let me know if u want more dirt!” Thus if you can pass my message on to Sanaá Z.

  18. Hi Guys, I am Alam Zeb, part of The Centaurus Project, I would simply say, we are Muslims, we have history of Architecture brilliance, West learnt from us for building in Crusades, they learnt Calculus from us which is the mother of Architect. We should look on it in possitive manner, a person who is making it, DEFINITELY THEY CAN AFFORD IT ASWELL and few people know that mostly the good hotels in Islamabad are FULL. Why we are behind west? we are Muslims, the best nation in the world. The Centaurus will make people’s mind to be best in what ever they are doing. I am approached by many construction companies, they are discussing one thing, that if The Centaurus is designed by ATKINS, we will also go for architecture brilliance. The Centaurus will let other think to invest in Pakistan, its first step towards modernising the mind of our people. I believe that we should never discourage some one, we should always encourage people, because a person who is doing something is BETTER THAN THOSE WHO ARE JUST WRITTING, specially the journalists, who know nothing except criticising.

    Thanks for possitive Replies…

  26. Mumhammad Umar Riaz says:

yes obviously we are able to maintain that hotel easily in my opinion those who are saying the that how can pakistan sustain that hotel ? in my opiion they forget that we are 7 atomic power and we are obviously able to maintain that hotel and every project we are not less then any country

  27. Fahim says:

In response to ALAM ZEB, who is apparently works in the same company :
Is the designer company ATKINS is a Muslim company too? I believe NO,
and don’t you just wanted to have same kind foreign investment and customers coming to Pakistan to visit to boost our economy.
So would you please stop criticizing and leading every thing back to religion.
More scientific and calculus invention relating with Muslim have no relative relationship with this project.
    REMEMBER:
Your belief is your belief and never relates the things which are not existing…If you tell me that ATKINS is a Muslim company then i will believe whatever you wanted to say as introduction of your speech.
    Thanks.

  28. Javed says:

    Salam,
Well, I am not in Pakistan so I don’t know the people involved in this project but according my knowledge, there would be lots of people making their money under this project.

I personally think that Pakistan should focus on three main things to move the country forward.

    1. To provide basic living conditions i.e. provide electricity, water, lowering food prices and security.
    2. Education, Pakistan should invest in education i.e. provide free education till Metric so poor kids could benefit and contribute to the economy. India done this about 10 years ago and they are getting the fruits now.
    3. Help local businesses to expand, this will provide more jobs for the economy.

Lilttle about myself, I am in U.K and I recently went to Pakistan, there is huge misconception that to move forward, Pakistan will need to become westernized; it is completely opposite. Western countries are now realizing that Islamic ways are the best ways.
With this I ask you all a question, that a country where poor people are dying because of food and there is a electricity crisis. Should that country spend money in 7 stars hotel (made only for rich people) which will consume huge amount of electricity as well.

This is good for Pakistan that tall buildings are being under construction and they must build. because this is the only way to increase the economy and value of Pakistan in the world..
on the second about the poor we can afford any thing either a 7 star hotel or a 3 star hotel its us which are dealing our profitable country, badly…. Just sit and think have you ever obeyed the law?? NO . Are you punctual?? NO. Do you have self respect for others?? NO. Do you have respect for Opposite sex??NO.. if all basic answers for the basic questions are NO then how could we progress… Its us who can allow a general to rule…. its us who forgive the BIG thiefs and Murderers and who brought this Generalism in Pakistan.. if we just raise once against this all next time no ll dare to do wrong with us….. just think it us who can boost up Pakistan…. every body in Pakistan just abuse the rulers and others but dont think what he is doing?? Nuffin… this is the thing which we have to think…..

  37. Ali Rizwan says:

    You people must see this….

And then you people think these buildings must complete.

those of u who r bad mouthing this project should look at the world around us and see how other countries are progressing ahead of us while we still sit behind years from them arguing about one project…we should appreciate this project and make dua for those who are risking everything to complete this project instead of being ungrateful…for those of you who appreciate this project God bless you🙂

  51. Executive says:

I would like to begin by thanking all those of you who can understand and appreciate the fact that the owners of this project have invested their hard earned money and have shown true patriotism towards their country despite the unstable political situation and constant economic downturn. The project has continued construction as per schedule and is well on its way towards completion InshahAllah. People in Pakistan need to understand that other muslim countires such as Turkey are years ahead of Pakistan and here we are criticizing a landmark project which will provide hundreds of jobs for people in pakistan and a project which is bringing foreign investment into the country. This project will also encourage other developers to invest in Pakistan by raising their confidence. Just imagine the fact that you will be able to shop with your family in a secure and air conditioned environment filled with international brands…Does that sound soo bad???
