Pakistani National Anthem

Its the 14th of August, and I woke up trying to remember all the words to the national anthem. Its a shame, a real shame, that I even had to make an effort to remember all the words. Each word should be etched in to my long term memory. Well, luckily all the verses of the anthem that I sang every morning at the school assembly gathering for more than 16 years came back during the morning shower. I had quite a fun time singing it loud, with all the fervor that had been pent up for a while.

And then I got a link to this video based on the national anthem via e-mail. It’s a slightly modernized version of the national anthem, but its quite all right. Nothing like the St. Patrick’s High School boys singing it at the top of their lungs every 14th August, but it does the job….

Enjoy. Click below on the image to play the video or visit here:

It is easy for those of us outside Pakistan to be nostalgic at such times, but it is Faiz’s words, not the national anthem, that ring in my ears –

“chale chalo, ke wo manzil abhi nahi aayi…”

Ah, nostalgia – some of us live on it, unfortunately!

You are right. And also a series of songs that one can sometimes tend to gloss over, but they require some seious thinking. Check Adil’s blog posts on them: http://pakistaniat.wordpress.com/2006/08/14/yeh-watan-tumhara-hai-mehdi-hasan/
