Only a few people can touch other peoples’ hearts in such personal ways as Ahmed Faraz did over his lifetime. Ahmed Faraz’s poetry was admired by millions, his verses moved people. He was probably the most romantic Urdu poet of this century, one of the greats of all times. I had the pleasure of attending a few Mushaa’ira where he recited his poetry, and once had the honor of speaking to him personally for a while. What a delightful gentleman – witty, unassuming, the literary giant who made everyone feel so comfortable around him. Pakistan and Urdu literature has lost one of its favorite sons today. A beautiful ghazal by him is below, sung by none other than maestro Mehdi Hasan Sahib. Watching it brought back childhood memories of beautiful days in Karachi, listening and learning adab and aadaab from my parents.
